The Ivy Restaurant And Bar – Round Two.

It’s my birthday tomorrow and James took me to The Ivy at the weekend to celebrate. We went this time last year; so we’ve now decided to make it a bit of an annual event for my birthday. (This time it took 8 weeks of desperately trying to get dinner reservations! AND we booked 2 months in advance! CRAZY). We had the most amazing meal, I just had to share!

To start I had the Buffalo mozzarella with foccacia, crushed broad bean pesto and vine tomatoes. While James had the grilled squid, chorizo and parsley salad. For mains I had Cornish lamb with sweetbreads & broad bean fricassée. I have to say, the lamb is served pink – this is the most amazing lamb I’ve ever ever aten. Absolutely amazing. I might also add, until I went back onto The Ivy website, I believed my lamb was served on a bed of Fois Gras… I just googled ‘sweetbreads’ and found this definition on Wiki. MENTAL. James had a rib eye steak, which has to be the biggest steak I’ve ever seen! It was huuuuuge! And beyond tasty! This came with a side of fries.

We then had an espresso each before squaring up the bill… Then we moved into The Ivy bar and had a round of cocktails.

Absolutely 5 star food with 5 star service. Brilliant. I can’t wait to go again next year! See you then The Ivy!

Shoreditch Fire.

This morning, like all mornings, I turned the TV on in the bedroom to watch/listen to BBC Breakfast as I got ready for work. I thought I was listening to the local BBC news when I heard Sian mention Shoreditch… this however was the national news!

There had been a massive fire ripping through a restaurant, office block and residential building since 4:30am just beside us in Shoreditch.

As we left for work we could smell the smoke outside our apartment, then I looked down our street and saw the thick smoke where the Gherkin Building usually stands tall and proud. (NB: Not the best picture in the world, but I’ve highlighted the smoke in the below!)

MENTAL.

Shepherdess Cafe, East London.

We first became aware of the infamous Shepherdess Cafe when we bought the NFT Guide To London 2008. Before we moved down to London we made a list of all the places that were MUST SEE/MUST VISIT to eat, drink and be generally merry.

The Shepherdess Cafe was on our list of eateries. We’ve lived in London for two years now and as a matter of pure coincidence, when we moved last summer, we moved to the same street that the Shepherdess Cafe resides on. Strange, but true. We commute past the cafe every day on our routes to work; about 2 weeks ago we were at the traffic lights and saw Mr Jamie Oliver sat in the window of the cafe (the windows are a sight to behold in themselves!).

We’ve never had a chance to get down to the cafe. We’re too lazy to get up ‘early’ for work and it closes at 4pm. However, recently, I’m rubbish at sleeping in on a weekend… So  when I woke up at 8am yesterday and couldn’t get back to sleep we decided to actually do something this weekend – “Let’s treat ourselves to the Shepherdess CAFFFF!”. And my god, what a treat!

I ate about a quarter – they give you the biggest portions EVER! All the above and a huge mug of (really nice!) tea came to £12. CHEAP CHEAP.

I have to say though, the sausages just weren’t to the standard of Rossi’s (RIP). But aside from that, it was well ‘lush’.

The Shepherdess Cafe is located on City Road, 5 mins from Old Street tube.
